Here’s the last newsletter of the school year! I’ll keep it quick:
Summer courses!
Need (or want?) a course this summer that counts towards endorsement — and is supported by a state grant to cover your tuition? We have the following (with links for info and registration):
Content courses for teachers offered by Weber State:
With support from Utah’s STEM EIP grant, Weber State is offering additional coursework at the 5000-level to develop expertise, pedagogical models, and collaboration with other science teachers. Registration is open!
Advanced Physics Lab for Teachers (June 2-6)
This lab-based course is intended for science teachers who are expanding their understanding and tools for physics investigation at an advanced level so that they can broaden lab and project opportunities for their own students. This course is hosted as a weeklong, intensive workshop with continued collaboration and sharing of final work. Teachers will complete “classic” experiments of physics, not-so-classic open-ended investigations, and conduct research of their choosing around particle detection. Registration link here; and/or reach out to Adam Johnston (ajohnston@weber.edu) with questions.
Chemistry Principles and Pedagogies I (July 21 - Aug 1)
This course fulfills the first semester of chemistry required for chemistry endorsement, but also utilizes student-centered pedagogies advocated by the AMTA’s modeling cycle of instruction. Course topics include structure and properties of matter, chemical reactions, definitions of energy, conservation of energy and energy transfer, and electromagnetic radiation. Participants will engage as learners of chemistry while developing their own skills as chemistry instructors. Registration link here; and/or reach out to Brooke Jenkins (brookejenkins@weber.edu) with questions.
Other programs and cohorts:
Ongoing Elementary Science Education cohort, June 9-13
For current cohort only. Future cohort planned to start summer of 2026.“3D” Science for Secondary Teachers at Cache County SD (via UtSTA), June 16-20
Hosted up north to spread the love (of science), but all are welcome! Tuition supported by STEM EIP grant.Secondary Science Teaching Methods at Weber State, Ogden (via UtSTA), June 23-27
Tuition supported by STEM EIP grant. We also offer this course as a “regular” semester offering in the fall.
For more information about any of these, please feel free to reach out to us!
Happy Summer!
At this moment, I’m about to head out to backpack in the desert for a week before I launch into summer teaching with lots of you. I hope you all have chances to break away soon, too. Enjoy your last days of school and your summer. You’ll hear from us again in August.
Let me know how I can help with anything else or if you have ideas for next year’s Teacher Twilight series — exciting new developments are afoot!
